Eaton Farms began developing our Tree Display system in 2003 when we realized the importance of our products being displayed in a fashion that is supportive of the Pennsylvania Pride Brand and our customer's brand.
For years and still today Trees are just plain difficult for retailers to display and care for. Trees blow over and get scarred or worse in the slightest wind, and the cost of watering is growing right along with the cost of labor. In today's marketplace, we must be efficient with our labor, and watering today just isn't efficient.
With all the difficulties relating to the display, maintenance, care and storage of Trees we were amazed that solutions were not offered years ago to Independent Garden Centers across the country.
Trees should be retailed like other agricultural products. But still today customers are expected to walk through mud, water and muck to make a buying choice. We wonder what would happen to milk sales if customers had to step in manure to grab a gallon?
Eaton Farms considered all of these inefficiencies, plus we wanted to do more to support tree sales and prices in the Garden Center. After five years of discussion and debate, and with the input of many IGC professionals we were able to begin testing on our units in 2007.
Spring 2007 we sent test units to several IGC's across the Northeast. Our initial goals were to simply test for quality, longevity and usefulness. We needed to know how they would stand up day to day and our basic units performed very well. In fact, we expect over 20 years of strong usefulness with no maintenance other than cleaning and paint touch ups.
Spring 2008 we have scheduled three full display units to be installed at three IGC's ranging from 65 hole to 133 hole designs. Early experiences have shown that irrigation and unit installation is simple and burden free.
More to come as each month passes. Please continue to check in for our monthly updates from our test displays. Tree display units will not be available for purchase until spring 2011, although we may allow for very limited earlier sales. Units will only be available to Eaton Farms customers and will not be made available to all IGCs until 2014. Patents have been applied for on display designs.
Eaton Farms, working with our IGC partners on this revolutionary project, will be holding informal meetings at the test locations this coming fall. Please watch for more detailed information on these meetings.
